The Wethersfield Library is seeking applications for Wethersfield’s first Poet Laureate! The role of the Poet Laureate is to encourage the appreciation, writing, reading and performance of poetry within the Town of Wethersfield.
Duties & Expectations
- Commit to a two-year term as Wethersfield’s Poet Laureate.
- Be comfortable speaking in front of an audience and interacting with audiences.
- Work collaboratively with library staff and community partners on at least two events each year to encourage the writing, reading, and performance of poetry. Events may include but are not limited to public poetry readings, workshops, lectures, and/or presentations. Readings may include open mic performances, poetry slams, poetry reading events, radio or television appearances and participation at community organizations’ events.
- Celebrate the Town of Wethersfield by composing poetry that speaks to, for, and of our town.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a current town resident
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Town of Wethersfield
- Must be available to participate in Old Wethersfield Book Walk on Saturday July 25, 2026
- Must be involved in the field of poetry as demonstrated by submitted samples of work and/or:
- A history of publications in journals and/or books
- Awards, honors, fellowships and/or recognitions
- A history of activity in the local literary community through teachings, readings, publications, and/or public presentations
- Nominees may not be part of the Selection committee, Wethersfield Library employees or family members of Wethersfield Library employees, or Wethersfield Library Board members or family members of Wethersfield Library Board members
