Library Policies:
Wireless Policy
The Wethersfield Public Library provides free wireless access (also known as “hot spots” and “WiFi”) to its network for public Internet use. By using the wireless access network at Wethersfield Library, the user acknowledges that he/she is subject to and agrees to abide by all laws, rules and regulations of the Wethersfield Library, the State of Connecticut and the federal government that are applicable to Internet use. The user specifically agrees to abide by the Library Behavior Policy and the Library Internet Access Policy. Wethersfield Library assumes no responsibility for the safety or configuration of user’s equipment or data while using the Library’s wireless network
Library patrons are cautioned that the Library is a public area which must be shared by widely diverse Library customers. Library patrons may not use the library’s wireless network to transmit or receive illegal, harmful, obscene or disruptive material. Library patrons are expected to respect intellectual property rights by making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data residing on the Internet. Any restriction or monitoring of a minor’s access to the library’s wireless network is the sole responsibility of the parent or guardian.
Wireless access is provided on an “as is” basis. The Library will try to ensure wireless access throughout the public facility areas, however there may be occasional “dead spots.” Users can move to an area where wireless access is available. Users are responsible for configuring their own equipment. Users may use only those existing hard-wired data jacks that have been approved and designated for public use by the Library. Users may not use any other hard-wired data jacks for Internet access and may not set up their own wireless access points. Anyone found doing so will be asked to disconnect their equipment and to leave the Library immediately. Library staff will not assist with setting up wireless Internet on patrons’ computer devices or do any troubleshooting.
Library printers are not available via the wireless connection. Wireless users requiring sound must use headphones so as not to disturb others. Available power outlets may be used wherever the cord does not present a tripping hazard or block access for other Library customers or staff. Chairs or tables will not be moved to electrical outlets. The Library assumes no responsibility for physical damage to or loss of equipment; users must keep their equipment with them at all times.
Communication over a wireless network is not secure. Any information sent or received over the wireless network could potentially be intercepted by another wireless user. There can be no expectation of privacy when using the wireless network. Wethersfield Library does not assure the safety of users’ data or personal information when using the Library’s wireless network. The user assumes all risks associated with the use of wireless access and agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Town of Wethersfield, the Wethersfield Library and all of its employees and agents from any and all injury, loss or damage arising out of the use of the Library’s wireless network.”
Conditions of this policy apply to patrons and their data when using laptop computers provided by the Library for wireless Internet access. Library staff will have previously configured these computers for wireless access.
Any attempt to circumvent Library procedures or any unauthorized attempt to access or manipulate Library equipment will result in permanent disconnection from the Library’s wireless network and denial of all public computer use at the Library.
It is the responsibility of all persons using wireless Internet access at Wethersfield Library to be knowledgeable of the terms of this policy. It is the responsibility of all Library staff to adhere to this policy as stated above.
